Howard Phillips Lovecraft was an American writer, and one of the essential authors of American science fiction, horror and fantasy. His audience was small during his lifetime, but over the decades since his death - by suicide - in 1937, he has become more and more prominent, and is considered by many to be one of the greatest among the classic horror writers. Lovecraft's work attracted a world-wide cult following when he created his Cthulhu mythos, and his Necronomicon. His work usually involves the exposure of the mind to unspeakable horror of a kind which is both alien, and altogether evil enough to drive one insane. It often involves beings from other dimensions and planets, and Lovecraft called his kind of writing "cosmic horror" or "cosmicism"
